The Ruleset

The Ostrichmonkey Hack is an in-progress, modular ruleset in the N/OSR tradition.

The current Basic Rules version covers classless character creation, basic dice procedure and resolution (aka, when and why do you need to roll), and a set of gear mechanics.

There are a handful of random tables to use as-is, as inspiration, or as baselines for creating your own stuff.

Let's get into some more specifics:

• Roll under resolution system with an optional partial success subsystem
• Spend attribute points to use abilities
• Slightly sturdier than average characters
• Simple wealth and resources rules

The ruleset is broadly compatible with anything you might use your favorite N/OSR ruleset with, and with a little bit of bending, probably more. 

The Future

Let's talk about "in-progress" now. The Basic Rules, is complete, in that it covers all the basics I needed it to. As I tinker and expand this ruleset, the main file will be updated (and the price probably increased). There is no set schedule as to when any of that will happen, aside from eventually. If you buy the ruleset now, you'll have access to all future updates. 

Scroll down to the "demo" section for a text only version of the basic rules. This text only version will remain free forever, but I'm not planning on expanding it with any updates.

Right now, as of 12/31/2024 the text only version contains only the Basic Rules.  It does not include the Advanced Character Update.

TL;DR

• Paid version: has nice layout, will get all future updates. 
• Text only version: always just the basic rules, available as an rtf or txt file.

What can you expect in the future? Biggest and most planned out is a set of archetype/classes. Outside of that, really whatever I think is interesting at the moment. Could be an expanded bestiary, travel procedures, city building, alternate magic systems, or something else entirely. That's part of the fun of this design sphere, the constant iteration and evolution.

Advanced Character Update

The latest update is now live (12/31/2024), and includes major updates and option to character creation! This update nearly doubles the size of the ruleset.

• Three new archetypes (classes) with sets of unique abilities. 
• Alternate systems for HP that rely on the gear you have equipped. 
• New options for character backgrounds, starting gear, and intuition questions. 
• A whole bunch of expanded gear lists, with tons of all new gear made to be compatible with the new rule modules.
